Not Enough Revisionists in Jail - Or Executed

Jewish judges and lawyers gathered, as announced in Smith's Report, in Berlin last November and cooked up more new ways to use the law to control discussion of the Holocaust on the Internet in countries all over the world. They've come up with this resolution lamenting, among other things, the fact that so few revisionists have been convicted of crimes in the countries in which such activities are a crime (no doubt they mean to increase the number of such countries, as they applaud Germany's membership in that shameful group). Presumably, they also lament that those convicted are only incarcerated for a few years (e.g., Germar Rudolf, Ernst Zündel) instead of being locked up for life or, better yet, exterminated altogether.

The attendees have returned to their respective jurisdictions, and are no doubt diligently working to suppress the freedom of speech practiced on the Internet that has so discomfited them in so many ways.

Inter-National Historical Disputes, and Trade

Jean would like to buy a lot of refrigerators from Mehmet (who makes good refrigerators cheaply in Turkey) for his (Jean's) customers in France.

But he can't. Or if he can, he has to pay more for them than if . . . their respective countries' governments weren't feuding over a historical matter (the killing of Armenians by Turks a hundred years ago). The French government just passed a law making it a crime to say that "it" wasn't "genocide."

So the Turkish government (or the French, or both) interfere with Jean and Mehmet's conspiracy to provide better refrigerators to French consumers while providing gainful employment to Turkish workers.

So it goes.

Jewish Lightning - with Swastikas!

The arson of over-insured buildings - and cars - has somehow over the years acquired the prejudicial sobriquet "Jewish lightning," a reference apparently not so much to the arsonists as to the owners of the torched assets who stand to collect from the insurance company.

The burning last November of a Jaguar in a Jewish neighborhood of Brooklyn was heavily marked as a hate crime, not only from the beer bottles littering the area (haters like beer) but from the spray-painting of swastikas and "KKK" on nearby objects and, just to be thorough, the torching of the BMW and the Lexus parked next to the target vehicle. The ADL has offered a $4,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of this arson, though their offer may have disappeared by the time you try to follow this link to it.

A report in a neighborhood Brooklyn newspaper now reveals that in this case, the arsonists themselves may be Jewish, though it leaves the ethnicity of the owners of the cars to inference from the heavy majority of those living and parking their cars in the area. Investigators have turned up evidence that the Jag was burned for the insurance money, with the BMW, the Lexus, and the overworked legacy of the Holocaust thrown in to make it look like anti-Semitism.

Do not expect major news outlets such as those that carried the original "hate crime" story to carry follow-up stories. Doing so might be seen as anti-Semitic.

Holocaust Controversies: It's Here!

For those who have read "our" indefatigable researchers Carlo Mattogno, Thomas Kues, and Jürgen Graf, the anti-revisionist Web site Holocaust Controversies have produced an imposing "Critique of the Falsehoods of Mattogno, Graf, and Kues."

I haven't read it (just received it - I HAVE read the aforementioned falsehoods themselves), but it looks quite like engagement - 571 pages of it! Even if it is itself a load of falsehoods, it is clearly a very large body of them, assembled with care and even skill by the Others who care about the things we care about.

There are today so few with the awareness involved in appreciating the importance of our issues that I feel we rather owe it to our adversaries to accord their efforts the (considerable) attention involved in evaluating their work - and cheer the spirit of engagement that their massive oeuvre bespeaks!

A Glimpse into the Future?

This report, relayed from a "warmist" Web site, is most remarkable for its description of an uneasy kind of truce between those asserting that the world will grow hotter with increasing speed and those saying there is insufficient evidence for such an assertion, and backing up their skepticism with repeated releases of (chiefly e-mailed) evidence of a campaign of deception on the part of many warmists.

This grudging recognition of their opponents by the previously dominant warmist movement came about only after the devastating revelations of "Climategate" (and recently, Climategate II) provided sufficient impetus for admitting the validity of the "deniers'" case. Until that time, such people as Gro Brundtland, Special Envoy of the United Nations for Climate Change, pronounced people who expressed skepticism at the warmist assertions "immoral."

Sound familiar? As yet, no respectable historian has placed his or her career at the mercy of those many (historians and otherwise) who assert the exterminationist understanding of what they have trademarked "The Holocaust," and it may be a long time before any does, despite the many and devastating exposes that have been published of the mendacity of most members of the dominant party to the dispute.

But as the heretofore-dominant case continues to crumble under the relentless and growing attacks it sustains every day from revisionists, the situation at historical conferences may one day come to resemble the description in the article. After all, "Hologate" has already occurred, many times over.

And it will continue to occur, over and over, and worse and worse.

France: Watch What You Deny

In a move that trades off freedom of expression for consistency in the legislation of historical sensitivity, the French General Assembly will vote on a bill (let's call it Gayssot II) making it a crime to publicly deny the (or a) genocide of Armenians on the part of Turks in World War I.

Objection to this bill is coming from . . . Turkey! The concern expressed by Turkish leaders has everything to do with the reputation of Turks and Turkey and nothing to do with freedom of expression, never a hallmark of Turkish governance to begin with.

This development portends curious future events in French politics. What if, for example, some latter-day Gayssot gets it legislated that it is a crime to deny the postwar genocides against Germans that occurred in Poland and Czechoslovakia? Would fingering Germans as merciless butchers of innocent Jews run one afoul of one of that law's subclauses?

When in France, just keep your mouth shut.

Holocaust Denial and Anti-Semitism

The terms “Holocaust denial” and “anti-Semitism” are hopelessly bound together in the public consciousness. In an article published this November on a blog page of the Chicago Sun-Times, it was reported that the US State Department’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, Hannah Rosenthal, would pay particular attention to a growing level of Holocaust denial. The article goes on to report that Rosenthal, the daughter of a survivor of the Buchenwald camp, conducted a group of seven American imams and Muslim community leaders to the sites of the former concentration camps of “Dachau and Auschwitz where millions were systematically murdered by Nazi Germany.” The article concludes with the statement that Rosenthal managed to get from the imams bearing witness to the tragedy of the Holocaust.

It all sounds neat and tidy, except of course that anyone who has bothered to look into the Holocaust story at all understands that millions were not systematically murdered at Dachau and Auschwitz. No historians of the revisionist or orthodox schools have made this claim for decades. Ultimately it is exactly such distortions and anti-German statements that motivate many who seek to revise the history of the Holocaust in light of the facts. And make no mistake about it, assertions that the Germans committed crimes in exaggerated numbers or with false macabre details amounts to anti-Germanism. Would there not be wailing and gnashing of teeth if someone asserted that even thousands of Palestinians were killed in Israeli-run refugee camps? In today’s hyper-sensitive, some might say Orwellian, society, which has exponentially multiplied the political correctness of the 1990s it is impossible to correct such outrageous claims about Dachau and Auschwitz without first being charged with Holocaust denial and then along with it anti-Semitism. It is demanded that everyone accept all claims about the Holocaust no matter how fantastic or improbable.

Plato established in his Gorgias, that when engaging in an argument it is most important to initially define your terms in a precise manner. While the general public unconsciously assumes they understand the terms "Holocaust denial" and "anti-Semitism" and their relationship, the truth is likely far from those carefully planted assumptions.

A Note from Arthur Butz

Caution.

In the September issue of SR (no. 185) I wrote that Rudolf Vrba was a cousin of Vera Atkins, the World War II British intelligence agent. Wikipedia based this claim on the 2007 (I erroneously wrote 2011) book Spymistress by William Stevenson. I confirmed via Google Books that Stevenson had written thus on his p. 3. Stevenson being a well-known popular biographer, I assumed he passed along a fact.

I later got the book from the library and looked for Stevenson's account of Atkins' encounter with Rudolf Höss, which he described on p. 310. The meeting is presented as occurring at the Soviet occupied Auschwitz camp in fall 1945. Received history, e.g. the earlier (2005) Atkins biography A Life In Secrets, by Sarah Helm, places the meeting in British-occupied Germany in March 1946.

I wrote to Stevenson c/o his New York publisher on 11 Oct. 2011 to ask for his comment on this discrepancy and as of 25 Nov. 2011 I had received no reply. Thus I assume Stevenson's version of the meeting is wrong.

Now I have found that Stevenson's book got reviews that made very negative judgments on grounds of factual content (e.g. Nigel West in the International Journal of Intelligence and Counter Intelligence, vol. 21, no. 3, 2008, pp. 594-608). This calls into question the veracity of Stevenson's claim of the Vrba-Atkins relationship. I have thus far been unable to verify the relationship because all relevant web pages I have found are based on Stevenson, the Wikipedia article referencing Stevenson, or in some cases on my September article.

My hunch is that Stevenson got that point, at least, right, but the reader is belatedly warned. I hope that the only factual error I passed along was the publication date of Stevenson's book.

I am writing in response to your rejection of several comments sent to you regarding your article, Fight against anti-Semitism still has hurdles

Your article is laudatory of Hannah Rosenthal, the State Department’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism and noted that Ms. Rosenthal is “paying particular attention to growing Holocaust denial…”

The gravamen of the rejected comments was that the United States government should have neutral officials, not officials who are emotionally involved in the issues before them. As a daughter of a victim of Nazi persecution and a former head of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, an organization with a strident anti-Revisionist agenda, Ms. Rosenthal appears to be extraordinarily inappropriate to act as a monitor of what is “Denial.” Another writer submitted a question concerning the cost to the taxpayers of a Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat…”

The comments were reasonable and interesting. Rather than post them, you ditched them.

CODOH is a Revisionist organization. We believe that it is important to defend free speech and promote open discussion. Expressing "Denial" has been made a felony in many countries, usually with the dishonest conflating of Revisionism with “anti-Semitism. We have seen a disturbing tendency to erode free speech and discussion in the United States State Department starting with the US sponsored declaration in the United Nations “Rejecting any form of Holocaust denial.”

With all due respect, Ms. Rosenthal seems to be part of this trend. Rather than a banal panegyric you should have asked important questions about the cross-over of private concerns and positions of public trust. For your uninspired article and your dishonest treatment of negative comments, you have been awarded CODOH’s "Dishonest Journalist of the Week award."

Dear Prof.-Dr. Olbertz:

Through its law school, Humboldt University is hosting a conference this month whose purpose is hostile to freedom of expression. Not only is your august institution making its Grimm Auditorium available for the sessions, two members of the Law School faculty (Bernd Heinrich and Tatjana Hörnle) are speakers at it. I refer, of course, to the conference of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists of November 15 through 18, titled “Holocaust Denial and Freedom of Speech in the Internet Era.”

The title is deceptively abstract. In fact, it takes little imagination to see, the subject is “Using the Force of Law to Discourage Open Debate of the Holocaust on the Internet,” an agenda antithetical to the freedom of discourse upon which both universities and the development of knowledge depend.

Now, I know that in today’s Germany, open debate of the Holocaust is indeed discouraged by the force of the law, and I know that Humboldt University’s Law School concerns itself with the design and application of laws. But excusing the complicity of Humboldt University in this campaign of repression is like excusing the firm of Tesch & Stabenow from developing and supplying the alleged means of the deaths of millions of Jews, Zyklon-B. (I might question whether it was used for this purpose, but I suppose doing would violate German law, so I demur.) The accusation against Tesch & Stabenow and the German people themselves, of course, comes from the very interests whose conference you plan to host. And they mean to suppress discussion of these and many similar accusations—all over the world.

Just because a pesticide firm concerns itself with poisonous gases, or a law school with the administration of laws, is no excuse for the firm, or school, to knowingly abet inhuman conspiracies. Your relying on the innocuous styling of the conference’s title will be rejected just as were Tesch & Stabenow’s claims that Zyklon-B was for killing lice.

Germany’s academy has a long and shameful tradition of serving the state in ways later shown to be deleterious to the wellbeing of mankind.

It is time for Humboldt to uphold humanitarian ideals that always have, and always will, transcend the state. Cancel the use of your facilities. Withdraw your speakers from the program. And take a stand for freedom of speech that even today remains so sadly lacking in the heart of European civilization.

The agenda of the IAJLJ is presented in a string of policy statements posted at IAJLJ. Policies include a defense of Ariel Sharon’s infamous 2000 "Strut through Temple Mount," a demand for the release of convicted spy Pollack, a call for the revocation of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3379, a denunciation of the Durban World Conference Against Racism, a demand that a human rights conference be canceled because it "will have prominently on its agenda allegations of violations of the human rights of the inhabitants of the Palestinian territories," and a petition accusing UN Special Rapporteur John Dugard of inciting terror with his reference to “the deaths and expulsion of thousands of Palestinian civilians…”

In short, the IAJLJ is especially noteworthy for its brazen hypocrisy in masquerading as a human rights organization while being dedicated to a notorious stand against free speech.

Unfortunately, this group is adept at soliciting governmental officials of good will to participate in its pseudo educational promotional events by touting itself as "a membership organization whose objects are to advance human rights everywhere." In fact, the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists now has the sinister distinction of being the most militant anti-free speech group on earth.

We are a group of historians, scholars and committed lay persons who feel that the up-coming conference in Berlin will only serve as a propaganda tool for restricting free speech and a real exchange of ideas. We understand and can respect the fact that different groups have memories and histories which are sacred to them. We understand that to even question accepted history can be controversial and even offensive to some. It is not our intent to shock or offend or "teach anyone a lesson." But forwarding a living memorial to a particular historical event is one thing, while having the freedom to examine that historical event in the routine way that all other historical events are examined is another.

Unlike the IAJLJ, we encourage the examination of history in the light of day over creating a memorial to any one specific historical event. We hold that it is the right, and the duty, of students and scholars alike to investigate and search for the Truth. The IAJLJ has successfully sold its idea linking Revisionism (referred to as "Denial") with "hate." In nearly every statement on the matter the IAJLJ uses the formula, "Combating Anti-Semitism and the Denial of the Holocaust." From our perspective, the IAJLJ is using dishonest rhetoric and misrepresentations to promote laws against what it sees as blasphemy regarding its memorializing of the orthodox Holocaust story.

The IAJLJ regularly defames Revisionists as “anti-Semites who claim the Holocaust is just Jewish propaganda.” That is not what we at CODOH argue. Briefly, we believe that much of the history we are taught today about the WWII era has been influenced by Soviet, British and American wartime propaganda which exaggerated and exploited real tragedies for the propaganda purposes of the victorious States. This concerns not just Jews but Slavs, Roma, Jehovah’s Witnesses and, in some versions, Gays. There is considerable research that supports our point of view and it should be inconceivable that anyone should be threatened with prosecution and prison for stating in public that they doubt what they can no longer believe.

We at CODOH want to encourage a progression to an age where governments can no longer pass laws mandating belief in a government-approved historical theory. The one-sided presentation of anti-Revisionist Conferences like the Berlin show have led to Draconian laws against “Denial,” laws that go against our fundamental ideals of free speech and are meant to stifle a free exchange of ideas. All people of good will, and all people who support the right of humans to speak openly about that which they feel important, and the right to dissent from the views of the State or a ruling class, should be concerned by the activities of the IAJLJ.

Dear Mr. Drummond:

Google’s recent decision not to impair access to sites promoting history displeasing to certain Jewish-aligned groups was not only a blow in defense of freedom of expression, but also, I suspect, in the long run a good business decision. I presume the scope of the decision was Google’s United States market, and that Google subsidiaries in other jurisdictions remain free to comply with local requirements in whatever manner least impairs the freedom of expression of users of the Internet and—more at issue—access to information on the part of Google users.

Your European areas of operation remain in some countries subject to laws concerning “hate speech” and “Holocaust denial” that undoubtedly lead you to abridge your compliance with Article I (Serve Our Users), Item 3 (Privacy and Freedom of Expression) of Google’s Code of Conduct.

Compliance with legal requirements, I am sure you well know, is one thing. Complicity in undertakings contrary to Google’s Code of Conduct is something else. And it is the possibility of such abetment that concerns me regarding a speech scheduled for November 16 in Berlin by Arnd Haller, Legal Director for Northern Germany and Central Europe of Google Germany GmbH at a conference of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists headed “Holocaust Denial and Freedom of Speech in the Internet Era.”

Dr. Haller’s talk is an untitled “Greeting,” in which his role might be somewhat that of a host (there are three other “Greeters,” all with German institutional loci). The next day, a session titled “The Recent Google Case in Argentina” is scheduled to be given by a judge and a lawyer from that country.

Of course, while I’m able to infer the necessary latitude allowed remote operators such as Google Germany GmbH, I’m in no position to appreciate any parallel latitude they might enjoy in quasi-official speaking engagements such as this. It is a gray area in which coordination across a far-flung enterprise such as the global Google is difficult to maintain and requires both vigilance and judgment.

And it is for this reason that I seek to notify you of Dr. Haller’s scheduled speech, in the hope that you will direct attention to it sufficient to ensure that his speech adheres to the letter and the spirit of the Google Code of Conduct I cited above, which I feel sure applies to him as well as to every other Googler.

I should heartily welcome your assurances that Dr. Haller’s remarks, and for that matter, the practices of Google in Germany and elsewhere adhere to the Google Code of Conduct in as punctilious a manner as Google’s recent related decision in the United States exemplifies.

We are writing to call attention to the worrisome activities of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists (IAJLJ). It is holding a promotional event in Berlin entitled Holocaust Denial and Freedom of Speech in the Internet Era November 15-19 2011.

“The Hamas so-called Charter is a cruder and more action-oriented version of Mein Kampf, calling explicitly for the destruction of the State of Israel and the murder of all Jews. The release of the Hamas prisoners by the Palestine Authority constitutes an invitation to these artisans of death to resume their terrorist bombing campaign in Israel's population centres, for the consequences of which the Palestinian leadership will be held directly responsible.”

We are a group of historians, scholars and concerned laymen who feel that the up-coming conference in Berlin will only serve as a propaganda tool for restricting free speech and open discussion.

The IAJLJ regularly defames Revisionists as “anti-Semites who claim the Holocaust is only Jewish propaganda.” That is not what we at CODOH argue. Briefly, we believe that much of the history we are taught today has been influenced by Soviet, British and American wartime propaganda which exaggerated and exploited real tragedies for propaganda purposes. This concerns not just Jews but Slavs, Roma, Jehovah’s Witnesses and, in some versions, Gays. There is considerable research that supports this point of view and it should be inconceivable that anyone be threatened with prison for stating in public that they doubt what they believe they have good reason to doubt.

The one-sided presentation of anti-Revisionist Conferences like this one have led to Draconian laws in a number of European nations against “Denial,” laws that go against fundamental Western ideals of free speech and open discussion. We respectfully request that the government of the Federal Republic of Germany reconsider its participation in the IAJL show.

Just one year ago, Elie Wiesel gave a speech in Connecticut, while a jury was in session just miles away, calling for the death penalty to NOT be given to two men who had committed an appalling crime against a family of four. Wrapping himself in self-righteousness, he intoned "Death is not the answer" to the man, William Petit, who had lost his wife and two beautiful young daughters to a couple of amoral monsters, and to Petit's supporters.

The crime committed was so brutal and horrible, and senseless too, that for this writer the death penalty is too good for these perpetrators. You can read about it here and here.

Did Elie Wiesel have the right to barge into this family's tragedy as some sort of "spiritual advisor", for which he was not asked? Of course not. Did he have any right to bring his "holocaust experience" into their personal grief as some kind of Jewish lesson in humanity?

No, and it's in the worst of taste but he is used to flaunting his imaginary suffering to audiences who have been indoctrinated and conditioned to respond like Pavlov's dogs to his trite phrases.

Germany Not Playing Nicely?

Predictions of dire consequences for Europe and the world suffuse Yasha Mounk's article in Foreign Policy if Germany's government acts in accordance with what is admitted to be the will of its people. He accuses/warns that the feared actions of Germany's government will even be harmful to Germans themselves, imputing to them a willfulness that he charges is an unwarranted reaction to the country's systematic demonization and subjection to reparations requirements since the unpleasantness of 1939-1945.

That a country's populace should remain peevish two generations after its suffering a genocidal bombing campaign, invasion from both sides, losing a third of its territory and being kept split in two by occupying powers for 45 years after the Unconditional Surrender would seem a bit churlish to anyone whose own country hadn't undergone anything similar, I suppose.

Interestingly, the author bio at the bottom of the article indicates that Mounk will soon release a book on German-Jewish relations since 1945.

Thanks to the Occupy Wall Street protests, that statement is now full of negative connotations: debt, joblessness, misery.

Still, look at the number - what does it actually say?It's easy to see why statistics are appealing. They have the power to make broad claims seem concrete.In a tidy manner, they tell us the scope and seriousness of the problems we face.

Unfortunately, people often arrive at those tidy figures in a disorganized fashion. Few people are dishonest enough to completely falsify their numbers, but many popular statistics create a deceptive picture of reality.

Because new media proliferates statistics at a greater rate than ever before, all levels of education need to address the issue of misleading statistics. Students should come to college with basic skills in statistical analysis.

Take the divorce rate for example. If you've heard (and believe) America has a 50 percent divorce rate, you're not alone. I took that statistic at face value for a long time, having read it again and again.

Whatever Happened to ... Control of Hollywood?

Way back at the beginning of last year (can you remember back that far? memory's important, as we all know), Oliver Stone got himself into hot water revealing that a miniseries he had completed called "The Secret History of America" showed Hitler in a nuanced light founded on the notion that he was, after all, a human being like many of the rest of us, rather than a two-dimensional cartoon of a demented monster, as depicted before, during and after World War II by those whose office it is to depict to the masses.

Did he also claim that Hollywood and TV are controlled by Zionist and Israel-promoting interests (he's half-Jewish himself)? Anyway, whatever he said, he retracted it with an apology, as noted back then in a blog post of mine here.

Anyone seen or heard of "The Secret History of America?" My inquiry today of Showtime, whose project it is (was?) garnered this response:

Sinister Female Auschwitz Guards

A seemingly anti-Nazi (and -German) book has appeared in Britain about how evil the modal German (Nazi, same thing) woman was during World War II, complete with pictures, of which the one showing female auxiliaries is alone well worth the effort of following this link to the review of the book.

Habitues of this blog recognize the always-implicit, and here explicit hatred mongered by the producers of the Holocaust propaganda of which this book is a prime example. The review would appear to be, as well, except possibly for the caption on the picture mentioned above, which could be interpreted as tongue-in-cheek by anyone actually viewing the picture itself.

Elie Wiesel joins Israeli Settlers and Intelligence Chiefs to Celebrate Theft from Palestinians

One of the leading land-grabbers in East Jerusalem is a settler non- governmental organization by the name of Elad. Elad’s goal is to rid Jerusalem of Arabs. One of its tactics has been to have Palestinian homes declared archaeological sites, whereby the homes can be taken over and the owners/residents evicted. It will do so by hook or by crook, says a left-leaning Jewish website Tikun Olam.

Joining these settlers at their commemoration service on behalf of this enterprise is Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel. Not only that, he’s the chair of Elad’s Advisory Board. Also attending the commemoration as friends of Elad were two former Israeli intelligence chiefs, Shabtai Shavit and Amos Yadlin, and a number of prominent officials.

To Wiesel, anyone who is a friend of Israel is a friend of his.

Another friend is John Hagee. In 2009, after reportedly losing a large sum of money he had invested with Bernie Madoff, Wiesel made a cool half million for one speech to Hagee’sChristians United for Israel (CUFI) benefit. During the celebration of the Feast of the Tabernacles at Hagee’s San Antonio TX mega-church, Wiesel was keynote speaker on the “Night to Honor Israel.” CUFI gave $9 million to Israel charities that night, of which $500,000 went to Wiesel’s Foundation for Humanity.

Discovered! The newspaper photograph in which Hilda Wiesel recognized her brother Elie at the OSE home near Paris.

At the end of her video-taped Shoah Foundation testimony in 1995 (the same year Wiesel’s memoir All Rivers Run to the Sea came out), Hilda shows some family pictures: her mother, her father, her sister and brother, and lastly the one above.

Hilda says (translated from French): With the cap, that’s him. My brother with the cap. That is this picture that I saw in Paris and thanks to this picture we met. I was for several months in Paris, as he was too; and we didn’t know we were both alive—and thanks to this picture we met.

Hilda may have been on the look-out for her brother when she saw this photo and thought or hoped it might be him. By contacting that OSE home that was mentioned in the story, and asking about Eliezer Wiesel, they located him there and the brother and sister were reunited. A heartwarming story, but it’s clear to me that the boy in this picture is not Elie Wiesel. Compare the known Elie in the picture below taken at the same time.

The now-infamous "bake sale" of the Young Republicans Club of the University of California at Berkeley drew an official rebuke from the university's chancellor and its toady Student Senate. Salon.com co-founder Gary Kamiya explores this regulation of speech and the subject of the speech in this post, which at one point even touches hypothetically on the Israel/Palestine confrontation that is so fueled by the Holocaust mythology.

The thrust of Kamiya's post is that race can't be openly, frankly discussed on (most) campuses.

I wanted to add a comment to the effect that race wasn't the only verboten subject on campus, nor even the most verboten. But I was unable to access comments on the post, of which there were said to be 48 at the time I tried. And I was unable to post my comment, either.

Moses parted the Red Sea. Jesus walked on water. And now Benjamin Netanyahu has healed the partisan divide in Washington D.C., the greatest miracle of all time, according to this morning's editorial in the New York Times.

In a forty-five minute address before a Joint Session of Congress the tough-talking Israeli Prime Minister convinced a heretofore bitterly divided U.S. political class to lay aside its budget battles and concentrate on America's transcendent purpose: to resettle Palestinian Arabs in outer Mongolia so Israel need no longer face the Arab "demographic threat" to Jewish democracy.

The nuance-laden speech, entitled "They Must Go!" was interrupted 637 times by standing ovations, which left many Congress members afflicted with repetitive motion disorders. "He makes it all so clear," gushed California Senator Barbara Boxer, rubbing an elbow dislocated by continuous applause. "Why should we be at each others' throats over budget matters when Israel faces extinction at the hands of HAMAS (Horrible Arab Mothers Affirming Sexuality)?"

"If they are not stopped from having babies on Jewish land," said California's other Senator Diane Feinstein, Jews will soon be a minority in their own country. In other words, it will be the Holocaust all over again."

"And that would undermine the free market," added Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, "because God gave the land to the Jews, and no one has the right to tell a landlord what to do with his land."

"It would also be a defeat for immigrants' rights," said Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) a leading spokesman for comprehensive immigration reform, "because Israel is a nation of immigrants continually made subject to terrorist attacks by Arab nativists refusing to recognize that unlimited immigration is good for everyone. They'll find that out once we relocate them to Mongolia."

Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida) agreed that violent expulsion was the best solution, but added that Fidel Castro should be included in the forced march to Mongolia. "The Arabs are radical Communists like Fidel. I mean, what's more Communist than one person, one vote? They're birds of a feather that should flock together."

Michele Bachmann (D-Minn.) offered to switch her party affiliation to Likud " if that would help God win in 2012." President Obama praised her spirit of conciliation and said he would consider her as a running mate if she didn't get the GOP nomination.

"She's on my short list," said Obama. "It's either her or Palin or Joe Lieberman," he added." "Bibi has promised to let me know soon."

The president pooh-poohed talk of Bachmann lacking qualifications to serve as president. "She loves God and Israel, and what other qualifications are there?"

Re: The Trojan protects you from what?

I support intellectual inquiry and healthy debate. But though you claim to be making the case for both, I don't see you using either. To discuss the unfortunate plight of Palestinians in Israel (who despite their mistreatment, generally live in better conditions than Palestinians in Arab-majority countries) is reasonable. But to dismiss the suffering and/or brutal murder of millions of innocent Jews through central and eastern Europe is derangement.

The ADL / Hillel manual for action is not a Zionist script to stifle free speech, as you may make it out to be. It's a simple defense against hate speech, such as yours; against overgeneralized, misinformed statements that people like you make with your "minimalist" ads. I am especially disgusted by your following comments:

1."invader in an area previously populated by Muslim Arabs" - are you saying that Jews never lived in Israel, for example, in the time of the Bible? And regardless, Muslim Arabs are still allowed to live, to earn a living, to vote, and to serve in elected positions in Israel.

2. "upon which Israel excuses not only the bloody process by which it established itself in Palestine"- do you mean the UN Mandate establishing the State of Israel? Or the 1948 War in which Israel was attacked by 3 countries simultaneously? Or is that history also fabricated.

3. "under the guns of its American-supplied military supremacy"- if you're lamenting the unfortunate circumstance in which a country under constant threat from extremist terrorists has to have soldiers providing security at shopping malls, I agree with you on that. And yes, Israel receives financial support from America. As do scores of other countries; probably most of the developing world, in fact, receives direct or indirect support from America. Israel also provides America with technological innovation. Ever read Startup Nation?

4. "the plight of Palestinians displaced (or slaughtered) by the Zionist project in Israel"- again, Palestinians are allowed to live in Israel. And, yes, there are bound to be unintended casualties when fighting against terrorists that use civilians for protection. Israel tries to minimize such casualties. In fact, Israel's ratio of civilians killed to armed enemies killed is the envy of American generals in Iraq for its lowness. Again, if there weren't terrorists attacking Israel, then the Israeli army could completely avoid killing civilians.

5. "soil of Palestine"- I understand that by using this name for a strip of land bounded by Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and the Mediterranean Sea, you are trying to establish that the land belongs to Palestinians. I agree that they have a right to live there. They have a right to economic opportunity there. They have more there than they have available in most Arab countries. But Jews have a right to live there, too. To deny the latter fact is as cruel and inhumane as to deny the former.

6. "Their schooling... force of arms."- are you lamenting that young people are prejudiced against Nazis? That does not require any schooling. A heart and a history book are sufficient for that. Even if you can't have the former, you should try to access the latter.Prejudice against Germans is inappropriate. For the most part, as is true for most peoples, they are respectable. But prejudice against Nazis is actually support for human rights, for equal opportunity, and against discrimination.

7."Steven Spielberg's monument to retributive hatred"- I dare you to find a single scrap related to the Shoah Foundation that promotes retribution or hate. On the contrary, the Shoah Foundation states as its goal "to overcome prejudice, intolerance, and bigotry through visual history testimonies." It is a shame that you have so obviously not watched any of their videos, which cover not only Jewish suffering, but the suffering of others, such as a survivor of Rwandan genocide, too.

An attack on ADL and Hillel is one thing. But I cannot stand the casual dismissal of the suffering of my friends' grandparents. It is indicative of uneducated and misinformed hate, which you are very good at displaying. Your flippant remark about sending the young off to war equally displays ignorance in your over-generalization of a situation that is already unfortunate. The less wealthy in our society are more likely to end up dodging bullets in foreign countries. That is a tragedy. But that is not related to the main thrust of your ignorant remarks about the Holocaust, so I'd rather not venture into that discussion.

I hope this gives you and Mr. Bradley Smith pause before the next time you try to spread your hate.

The End of Debate: Playing the "G" Card

A book by Edward Herman published last year catalogs examples since World War II that argue that calling the deeds or effects of political opponents "genocide" is the chief weapon by which the US and its allies stain their images indelibly and at the same time shut off all debate or analysis that might in any way ameliorate their guilt or the magnitude of their purported crimes. The book further identifies the United States as the chief abettor, enabler, and instigator of the massacres in question in every case.

Herman's choice of time frame enables him to include a genocide of Palestinians that he marks as having begun in 1948 and continuing to the present day. It also enables him to exclude what people on both sides of the debate might call the "mother of all genocides," that in Europe from 1939 to 1945. In this 2007 blog post, Herman dismisses Paul Rassinier and Arthur Butz as "cranks," perhaps to mollify the terrible forces massed in defense of the Holocaust legend, but to my reading leaving open the possibility that with that word, he expresses not his own verdict, but rather the comparative impotence of these writers vis-à-vis popular opinion.

Despite his ducking the seminal instance of his subject, Herman's study and commentary are of great relevance also to people who do not regard Rassinier and Butz as cranks.

Another "Denier" Bites the Dust

The war against open debate claimed another victim recently, the British Palestine Solidarity Campaign, who, under Zionist pressure, recently decorated their Web site with this declaration:
"Any expression of racism or intolerance, or attempts to deny or minimise the Holocaust have no place in our movement."

Notice how "intolerance" and "deny or minimize the Holocaust" are put in the same sentence, in this case without quite saying that they are the same thing. Clever.

Affiliated with the PSC? Run afoul of this proscription, and those two unrelated things may come crashing together - with your name right in the space between them.

The Nakba, of course, remains fair game - deny and minimize all you like.

Responding politely to our applications to buy a small ad in your newspaper, New U’s Advertising Manager Natasha Monnereau wrote, “We are unable to accept requests having any association with Bradley Smith.” In another, she included a full copy of New U’s advertising policy, which emphasizes your right to reject any advertisement that doesn’t suit you, but leaves unmentioned your right to accept advertising that might not suit other powers holding sway over your publication.

Powers, for example, like the Anti-Defamation League and the Hillel Foundation. Perhaps Natasha, or even your entire staff, have already received a friendly warning from a representative of your campus chapter of the Hillel Foundation, in accordance with the instructions on Page 16 of the ADL/Hillel publication “Preventing Holocaust Denial on Campus: A Manual for Action.” Those instructions include marching orders for keeping ads from my Committee for Open Debate of the Holocaust (CODOH) out of your paper, and in the event one slips through, how to punish those who have allowed it to happen.

The Manual is a remarkable document. You can inspect it at http://tinyurl.com/3s5czz7 to see what fate you have been spared. You are, for whatever reason, punctilious about complying with the censorship imposed by the terms of this Manual, and to my mind this raises the question as to whether you comply with it when you make editorial decisions as well. In any case, New U continues to support the interests of Israel warmly, as may be noted on Page 4 of your May 31 issue, in which the avid reception of the Fourth Annual iFest Week of Anteaters for Israel is noted with the rousing headline “It’s a Celebration.” In the face of the strife that has torn your campus since Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren’s speech there February last, it is impressive to see that you remain quite fearless about promoting at least his side of the contretemps.

The Great Seal of UC Irvine displays the uplifting motto, “Let There Be Light.” I regret that your paper does not better uphold it.

The Daily Trojan does indeed provide protection. Its General Ad Policies recite the goal of “safeguarding USC’s Principles of Community,” in the copy kindly provided to the Committee for Open Debate of the Holocaust (CODOH) in rejecting the paid advertisement we sought to place in its pages.

In providing this protection, it also provided (unsought) protection to the student body from Open Debate of a body of history much called upon by the only nuclear power in the Middle East to claim over $3 billion per year of American taxpayers’ money, plus the additional billions paid to repressive client regimes in neighboring countries to bribe them to protect this invader in an area previously populated by Muslim Arabs.

And thus, it protects the USC community from the MTD (Mentally-Transmitted Disease) of an accurate understanding of the history upon which Israel excuses not only the bloody process by which it established itself in Palestine, but of the still-bloodier process by which it expands and tightens its hold on peoples (Jews and Arabs alike) under the guns of its American-supplied military supremacy.

Principles of Community? USC is home to students from Israel. It is home to students from Palestine and other Arab countries whose citizens appear to sympathize with the plight of Palestinians displaced (or slaughtered) by the Zionist project in Israel. USC is home to thousands of American students, many Jewish, most not, thoroughly schooled in the sanctity of this very “controversial” novelty on the soil of Palestine. Their schooling likewise, pursuant to the law in many of their states, instructed them prejudicially on Germans before and during World War II and Germany’s National Socialist regime that America and its allies “changed” through devastating force of arms. And it is home to Steven Spielberg’s monument to retributive hatred, the Shoah Foundation.

What Principle of Community, then, might it be that the Trojan is protecting by rejecting a text link that reads, “The Holocaust. It’s a Plan. What to do if you care about Israel above anything else (über alles), and Bradley Smith and his Committee for Open Debate of the Holocaust (CODOH), manages to get the student newspaper on your campus to carry one of his minimalist ads. Israel, according to the script, is to be defended against any and all who might attack, or even attempt to reason with it, or the widely held beliefs upon which its command of so much sympathy on the part of Americans is based. Americans, after all, constitute the heart and mind of the world’s 800-pound gorilla, Israel’s benefactor, enforcer, legitimizer, and Godfather.

The Plan is disseminated through those outposts of subservience to Israel on American campuses, the chapters of the Hillel Foundation, and its goal is to prevent those few inquiring (young) minds on American campuses from prying into the factual basis of the story of the Holocaust (the Martyrdom of the Jews). Bradley Smith’s CODOH engages in the annoying practice of placing advertisements in campus newspapers that tempt respondents to be exposed to alternative views of the Story and the findings of (some, proscribed) investigators who have looked into the matter.

The investigators CODOH favors, undeniably, are those who attend primarily to “forensic” evidence—archaeology and documents from the period, much of it recorded by those (Germans) who are held to have perpetrated that Holocaust. Indeed, many of the investigators, though by no means all of them, are themselves Germans—all too young, of course, to have numbered among the perpetrators themselves.

Back to the campus newspapers. Hillel and its “big brother” in the larger society beyond the campus, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), somehow, react to such initiatives in a way that clashes conspicuously with the ostensible spirit of enlightenment at institutions of higher learning—that ideas are to be considered on their merits, and in particular, that allegations as to historical fact are to be considered on the basis of the evidence for or against them, with quality of evidence taking precedence over quantity, popularity, or the weight of coercion employed for their defense or enforcement. Examples such as that of Galileo are sometimes called upon to depict the dynamics in play in such cases.

Hillel and ADL, then, undertake to oppose these insidious little ads from CODOH not with rejoinders of facts, but rather with that essential tool of the Inquisition, charges of blasphemy (or, more recently, “hatred” of the victims or of those who today claim to be descended from them, or to run a country that “protects” them). Their Manual for Action encourages—in chilling detail—a confrontation of fact with “force” that would make Torquemada cheer. That is, the Manual at no point even admits any possibility of engaging Bradley Smith’s side with argumentation, fact-based, morality-based, or otherwise. It instructs in the methods of marshalling the force of institutionalized opinion against his invitation to partake of the fruit of knowledge—a modern-day reincarnation of the hoary sin of Blasphemy, resplendent in all the reeking Medieval rags of superstition and persecution for Wrong Thought.

Far be it from what any Jewish organization besides the Jewish Defense League would recommend to entail violence: the Manual even suggests that activists refrain from confiscating or destroying existing copies of a campus newspaper carrying an offending ad—leave this to the contrite perpetrators themselves as they come to grips with the enormity of the offense they have committed in light of the “firestorm” of official and popular rebuke, igniting which is the main focus of the instructions in the Manual. Let Jewish hands always remain clean, at least insofar as visible physical acts are concerned.

Meantime, those acts that are not necessarily visible to all remain at center stage: complain and threaten, and do it where it counts: with the Administration. This issue of visibility illuminates an interesting attribute of the Manual as it has thus far been distributed. It is, in all its repressive glory, visible to all on the Web site of the ADL. One might think, in view of its reason-phobic character, that it might have been distributed to its adherents as at least a semi-secret communiqué—something short of the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, for example, but nonetheless discreet to at least some extent.

But no. It’s There for All to See on the ADL Web site, at least for now. And in the thoughtful, such as your correspondent is pleased to see himself, this raises a question: why so public about all this? Two possibilities come to the mind of your thoughtful, but cynical, correspondent: first, that the instigators of the Manual are so filled with a self-impression of such unimpeachable, universal righteousness that they have no inkling of the crime against thought (not to be confused with thought-crime) they are committing; and second, that they are so grossly overfunded for their obsolete mission of combating anti-Semitism that they must contrive even this improbable project as a means of creating the impression that they are putting their surfeit of pelf to good use despite the paucity of targets against which they could direct it. Take your pick. Maybe it’s both, but in either case, it’s grotesque, when you step back to contemplate it.

The treatment it advocates for Bradley Smith’s invitations to inquiry does, indeed, imply some sort of criminal intent in the advertiser, despite the fact that there is as yet in the United States no official thought-crime on the books such as stops the mouths, if not the minds, of Germans, Austrians, Swiss, French, and people in a growing list of countries headed, of course, by Israel.

The matter at issue in the case of CODOH’s paid advertisements in student newspapers is a slight twist of the standard issue of freedom of speech for students (and faculty) on campus. It has, rather, to do with freedom of hearing or, more broadly, freedom of information (including “lies,” notwithstanding the protestations of Hillel/ADL). Censorship by the university administration is still censorship even when it is inspired by the righteous indignation of Hillel and ADL, and just as well for a paid advertisement as for any other part of the newspaper.

Wrapping itself in sheep’s clothing, the Manual cleverly couches its assault on students’ informational rights in terms of those very rights, diverting attention by urging its executors to remind student editors that they have the right to reject any advertisement that agents provocateurs like ADL/Hillel may make it too uncomfortable for them to carry. And they certainly do, but naturally ADL/Hillel make every exertion to avoid the obvious implication that rejection of a free-information-proffering ad such as CODOH’s itself limits the rights of the readership to receive information, not to mention the newspaper’s right to collect the admittedly minor fees that CODOH always pays up front. Propaganda is always about controlling the subject.

The Manual at no point discloses the ulterior motive of its campaign, which is, ever and always, suppressing criticism of the actions of the state that excuses its very existence on a sort of restitution for the “Holocaust” visited upon Jews and other enemies of Nazism in Europe before and during World War II. The linkage, again, is to be found on a Web site, in particular that of Hillel, which declaims:

Israel advocacy is a central force in promoting a positive Israel agenda on campus and for developing a cadre of articulate Israel activists. This is an outstanding opportunity for student leaders to affect the culture of Israel on our campus. Through their knowledge of and passion for Israel, we have the ability to have a profound impact on our campus community.

The “profound impact” referred to in this passage not only includes dissemination of a thorough whitewash of Israel and its actions in the real world, but suppression of any inquiry into those portions of history that happen to bear on its founding mythology and the basis of ongoing excusal of the depredations it continues to commit on those peoples and countries with which it shares the world.

Inevitably and vociferously, it conflates CODOH’s opposition to suppression of free expression into hatred of a people and/or a religious group. This shrill calumny, long the stock in trade of parties who have no substantive argument to mount in their own defense, is wearing thin.

Just how thin can be tellingly gauged from the laundry list of repressive, vengeful, fearsome list of measures detailed in the forty pages of the ADL/Hillel Manual for Action.

With the help of the New York Times and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Elie Wiesel and his backers did not shy away from criminal deceit by purposely misidentifying an unknown face in this famous photo as belonging to Elie Wiesel.

The above high-resolution photograph of Buchenwald survivors was first published in the New York Times onMay 6, 1945 with the caption “Crowded Bunks in the Prison Camp at Buchenwald”. It was taken inside Block #56 by Private H. Miller of the Civil Affairs Branch of the U.S. Army Signal Corps on April 16, 1945, five days after the Buchenwald camp was liberated by a division of the US Third Army on April 11, 1945. None of the men in the picture were identified at that time.

The U.S. Army photographer was in block #56, not #66

The U.S. Army photographer said he was inside Block #56. The “children’s block” that housed the so-called “boys of Buchenwald” was #66. This was not a typo. Note that these men are not children or teenagers, except for the youngster on the lower left who has been correctly identified as 16 yr. old Myklos (Nikolaus) Grüner, and a couple others. These adults appear to be a mixture of sick individuals suffering from a wasting disease (Grüner learned after liberation he had TB), along with basically healthy men who were also in that block for some reason five days after they had been freed. As we have read from many Buchenwald inmates, they moved about at will from the day of liberation onward. In Elie Wiesel’s book Night, he even says that some of the boys in his block went to the city of Weimar the very next day to steal potatoes and rape girls.

The true facts of this photograph have never been told and perhaps are not known. (Grüner has written inStolen Identity that he left a procession of youths being led to the camp entrance on the morning of April 11, scurried into the nearest barracks and jumped into an empty bunk space. It turned out to be this one.) But because of the man standing there stark naked except for ....

Another official transport list of the youths sent to France from Buchenwald in summer 1945 has come to my attention. Can it possibly be the “smoking gun” to prove that Elie Wiesel in not one of the “boys of Buchenwald?”

On June 14, I posted a blog on this site questioning “What Happened to Waltzer’s Book about the ‘boys of Buchenwald?’” Professor Ken Waltzer of Michigan State University wrote a comment to that blog in which he stated, “Elie Wiesel was there (in Block 66 at Buchenwald) with other boys from Sighet, who knew him; he was interviewed by military authorities after liberation, in order to permit departure from the camp; andhe went after liberation in early June, 1945, to France, to Ecouis…. one among 425 boys who did so.”

Prof. Waltzer has for years been firm in his insistence that Elie Wiesel was on the transport to France from Buchenwald, as one of the “boys of Buchenwald,” a legend in the making. This is largely based on a document containing the name of Lazar Wiesel of Sighet, born Oct. 4, 1928, on the transport list of over 500 Jewish “orphans” from Buchenwald to Paris dated 16th July, 1945. (Note: Elie Wiesel’s official birth date is Sept. 30, 1928)

This may be Inconvenient History’s first Profile of a living subject. David Irving (born 1938, England) is not only living, but—very happily for the rest of us—working at a pace that would tire anyone half his age, at this moment on a biography of Heinrich Himmler. His only career after a stint as a millworker in Germany’s renascent steel industry after World War Two has been researching, writing, and publishing history, all of it placed within Europe in the Twentieth Century. His distinguished and strife-torn career, then, is already about twice as long as any “average” career, and his productivity exceeds all norms by a large multiple. While his aggressive interpretations of the evidence he examines produce books that read like novels (with footnotes), not one of his titles, neither in English nor in his equally fluent German, is fiction.

Two virtues distinguish David Irving from other historians. First, he is quite innocent of formal education, or training, in history. In fact, he claims no college degree whatsoever, though he obviously commands erudition vastly in excess of the secondary education he received. Concerns for a secure and respected career as an academic historian have, therefore, never affected his pronouncements. Second, he bases his historical findings entirely on original sources—writings in most cases, and direct personal interviews in others. His application of this policy is rigorous—he in fact eschews not only translations, at least of German sources, but he also avoids even purported transcriptions. A striking example of this practice appears in the extensive personal diary of Joseph Goebbels, who wrote the journal in his own neat, but archaic handwriting, quite illegible to native readers of German today. Irving has painstakingly trained himself in deciphering this script to a level of accuracy probably attained by no other person since Goebbels’s death. His biography of Goebbels appeared in 1996.

An alleged revisionist forgery

In 1990 German revisionist Udo Walendy published an issue of his journal Historische Tatsachen (Historical Facts) entitled Der Fall Treblinka (The Treblinka Case) that focused on the numerous absurd allegations surrounding this supposed “pure extermination camp”. On one of the first pages of this publication Walendy has reproduced in facsimile a newspaper clipping from the Polish-language London newspaper Dziennik Polski (The Polish Daily) dated 11 July 1942, together with a German translation of a part of an article appearing in said clipping, together with a brief commentary on it. The part of the facsimile offered in translation appears to have been either rendered clearer and/or slightly enlarged or retyped and inserted on top of the facsimile (cf. Illustration 1).

Walendy’s introduction, translation and commentary read as follows in English translation:1

“On 11 July 1942 the Polish Daily, a newspaper of the Polish government in exile in London, reported on a press conference held by the British Minister of Information on 9 July 1942, quoting the exile-Polish Minister of the Interior S. Mikolajczyk word for word under the heading 'The Slaughter of the Jews':

‘...All in all 2,500 people were murdered this night, while the remaining 25,000 people were brought to camps in Belzec and Tremblinka. In Izbica Kujawska 8,000 individuals were driven away in an unknown direction. In Belzec and Tremblinka the people are reportedly killed with poison gas.’

One thing is certain, however, namely that it was only on 23 July 1942 – that is 14 days later! – with the arrival of the first transport of Jews from Warsaw that the Treblinka camp was opened!!

It is a well-worn truism that hunger is a weapon in war, and starvation may claim more victims in war than disease, cold, and the stupendous efforts of each side to kill members of the other side. But in mortal struggles between nations and their respective peoples, hunger and allied deprivations are also an “enemy within”—a consequence of the logic that he who fights cannot farm, nor bring fuel, nor administer medicine. The unforgiving logistics of life on earth become cruel and wrenching when masses seek to avoid—or impose—subjugation by or upon other masses.

But in the late 1930s, Hitler, for whose perspicacity Author Tooze allows considerable respect to shine through his text, saw that his Germany might face annihilation between the jaws of a vise formed on the west by the victorious Allies of World War I and by the nascent Soviet Union on the east. He details vividly how Hitler saw Germany’s salvation in that very land mass lying to the east of Germany that was occupied chiefly by the same golom of communism that formed the belligerent jaw, so to speak, of the vise. What he saw as the covert motivator of both jaws of this vise was International Jewry, as Tooze makes abundantly clear in his narrative.

Tooze never comments on the effective truth of Hitler’s concerns regarding International Jewry as the enemy of Germany’s “Aryan” civilization, nor does he explore any history bearing on its validity. He is a historian chronicling what amounts, at least in one view, to a titanic industrial contest between Germany and its occupied and allied countries on the one hand and Britain, the US, and the USSR and their allied countries on the other.

The Massacre

There are many different accounts and interpretations of what happened on 9 April 1948 at Deir Yassin, a small village on the west side of Jerusalem. For ardent Zionists it was a battle at the beginning of Israel's War for Independence. For most historians (privately, in opinions they can no longer express without unacceptable professional consequences) it was a massacre of Arabs committed by dissident Jewish factions of the Irgun and the Stern Gang. For Palestinians it was the beginning of the Nakba or The Catastrophe, when they were stripped of 78 percent of historical Palestine.2

Despite these different interpretations, almost all will agree on the following:

Deir Yassin was a village populated by about 750 Arabs located 3 km west of Jerusalem near the top of a hill accessible only by one road coming from the east.

With about 120 men, the Jewish terrorist gangs known as The Irgun and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin at 4 a.m. on 9 April 1948 in their first joint ‘military operation’.

Alerted by guards, the villagers from within their stone homes and with few weapons (including two machine guns) were able to kill four of the terrorists and wound thirty-six, bringing the attack to a standstill by late morning.

The gangs then sought the help of soldiers from the Palmach, the elite fighters of the Haganah, or the main Jewish military force. These seventeen professional soldiers, using a 52-mm mortar, conquered the village within an hour.

After the Palmach soldiers had left, the gangs went from house to house killing women, children, and old men.

They paraded some of the Palestinian men through the streets of Jerusalem and then brought them back to the stone quarry on the south side of Deir Yassin. There they shot them all to death.

The Irgun and the Stern Gang then herded the villagers who were unable to flee (down the mountain to the southwest toward Ein Karem) into the school and threatened to blow up the building with all the people inside.

The bloodbath was finally ended when Jews from the neighboring settlement of Givat Shaul intervened, forcing the gangs to let the Palestinians out to flee to East Jerusalem.

In the following two days the bodies of over a hundred Palestinian villagers were either thrown into cisterns or burned in the quarry.

During the evening of 9 April at a tea and cookies party for the press, the leader of the Irgun bragged of having killed 254 Arabs. This number was reported in the New York Times on 10 and 13 April.

Within a year, the homes of Palestinians at Deir Yassin were resettled by Jews, most of them from Romania. In 1951 the Israeli government moved them and created a mental hospital among the buildings in the center of Deir Yassin. It was called Gival Shaul Bet and later the Kfar Shaul Hospital.

No Peace for Rudolf Hess

In July news circled the globe that the body of Rudolf Hess, the one-time deputy to Adolf Hitler, was exhumed from a family funeral plot. His bones were cremated and scattered at an undisclosed location at sea. Karl-Willi Beck, the mayor of the Bavarian town of Wunsiedel where Hess was buried, justified the action by asserting that the grave had become a site of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis.1

Apparently Hess had requested in his will that he be buried in Wunsiedel with his parents in their family plot. At the time of his burial, the local Lutheran church, which supervises the graveyard, did not object and said the wishes of the deceased could not be ignored.2 The removal of Hess’s body and the subsequent disposal of his corpse in a method reminiscent of the recent burial of Osama bin Laden invites a reconsideration of both his life and the death.

Rudolf Hess was born in Alexandria, Egypt on 26 April 1894. The young Hess volunteered to fight for Germany during the First World War and as early as November 1914 had taken part in trench warfare on the Somme. Hess was awarded the Iron Cross Second Class for his bravery and suffered two severe wounds during the conflict.3

A gross distortion of Real Historical events

"At eighteen he [Germar Rudolf] learned of the post-war expulsion of twelve million Germans..." (Paul Eisen, My Life as a Holocaust Denier, Smith’s Report 184, p11)

This statement is not accurate. If you ever have contact with Germar Rudolf then he should be promptly corrected on such a fallacy.

It is a fact agreed upon by all historians of whatever disposition that more than half of these 12 million Germans fled to the west before the Soviet army had even reached their territory. What makes this especially pertinent for any would-be Holocaust revisionist is that authors such as Walter Sanning (with some general approval expressed by Rudolf) have taken the view that any Jews who may have fled from the Nazi armies (in a war which Hitler waged as part of an attempt to conquer living space in the east the same way that Europeans had conquered North America) are not to be counted as "victims of Hitler" if they happen to perish behind Soviet lines as a consequence of the war.

If one is going to take such a view that itself is OK, but is really incumbent upon you to practice honesty and apply the same standards to Germans who fled long before their territory was occupied. To make it sound as if all or even most of these Germans who fled were expelled after the war is a gross distortion of real historical events.

For twenty years Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust (CODOH) has focused on taking the revisionist critique of the orthodox Holocaust story to the university campus across America. We have argued these twenty years that academics and students alike allow—encourage—a routine examination of the orthodox Holocaust narrative, just as every other historical narrative is open to such an examination

For twenty years we have struggled to crack open the taboo that prohibits such an examination of historical facts, a taboo that is supported collectively by academics in every discipline, by the chancellors and administrations of world-renowned universities and community colleges alike. It is a taboo that is promoted with a special fervor by such special-interest organizations as Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, and the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. Together they have multi-million-dollar budgets, while Hillel alone is represented on more than 500 American campuses.

In the American classroom the conventional Holocaust narrative is the one historical narrative that cannot be addressed openly, which means it cannot be addressed honestly. To make certain that this intellectually corrupt environment for students and academics alike continues and prospers, Hillel and ADL together have published and distributed to student newspaper staffs nationwide a 10,000-word paper titled Fighting Holocaust Denial in Campus Newspaper Advertisements--A Manual for Action. CODOH is the one entity publishing revisionist copy in the student press. The one purpose of this Hillel/ADL multi-million-dollar partnership publication is to stop CODOH from working on the American campus

This is a tough act to go up against. I admit it. At the same time, I’m going to continue to go up against it. The program this academic year is simple enough. While I cannot lay it all out here for the benefit of the folk at Hillel and ADL, I can say that we are going to be "in touch" with more students, more faculty, and larger segments of the administrative system, with more target material, than ever before. And this year—and this will depend significantly on contributions—we are looking at public speaking options on campus.

An open debate on the conventional, taboo-protected Holocaust narrative will help change American civilization from the bottom up. On campus students and faculty alike will be able to question the "unique" monstrosity of the Germans, and to ask (finally) what role Jews have played in the worlds "oldest hatred." Ordinary journalists will feel free to ask Holocaust "survivors" probing questions they would never think of asking now, and have not asked over the last sixty years. Hollywood and the publishing industry would turn away from using German stereotypes to represent evil, and Jewish stereotypes to represent anything and everything—but evil. That in itself would be a cultural revolution. And then there is television. How much do I need to say?

And of course there is the U.S. Congress, such as it is. An open debate on the Holocaust narrative? The new, modified, adapted to the truth narrative would expose the U.S. Congress to the necessity to rethink its relationship with the Israeli State. The Congressional world would fall apart. Without being able to morally exploit a now-ruined Holocaust story, how many more billions would it think morally justifiable to allocate to the Israeli military, including its nuclear weapons? Not so many perhaps? How would that affect the Arab Spring? Iran? I don’t know, but an honest view of an historical narrative focused on Jews, and through Jews to European, Christian, and Muslim cultures the world over would seem to me a worthwhile task.

We’re going to make some of this happen. How much of it we can make happen is significantly dependent on the support from those of you who seriously want to see it happen. I’m not going to spend a lot of money at any one place. But I will have to spend money—week after week after week. If you can help, please do. If you can send a couple, three or four thousand up front, please do. If you can send fifteen, twenty dollars a month please do. If you are unable to contribute anything yourself right now, perhaps you have a friend, an acquaintance, an uncle who would like to see this happen. Talk to him or her. Have them read this appeal.

This is an attempt, admittedly futile, to remove some of the slime thrown at me in a letter addressed to President Gearan and circulated to over 250 people on October 3, 2009. It was written by Jim McKinster and five other faculty members and allegedly signed by 32 people in all. I heard about it by happenstance soon after it was circulated, but neither the President nor any of the six who circulated it was willing to provide me with a copy. That is a typical cowardly response employed by those who use this smear method to accuse, try, and censure someone who dares to speak truth to power. (I finally got a copy last week, hence the 20-month delay in my response.)

Their letter and a copy of the op-ed I wrote in the Finger Lakes Times are attached.

Allow me to refute the lies and innuendos that these “colleagues” have levied against me, behind my back. Since each of you received the detractors’ letter, I am sending you this rebuttal.

1. The purpose of my op-ed was to define Holocaust denial. That should be clear from the byline “What do deniers really mean?” It was submitted in response to the media frenzy and demonization of President Ahmadinejad who addressed the UN General Assembly and whose picture was shown above my guest appearance piece. Instead of acknowledging this, my faculty detractors feigned outrage that it appeared on the eve of Yom Kippur. I had nothing to do with the timing of the article and make no apology for when it appeared vis-à-vis a Jewish holiday.

2. More egregiously these faculty detractors claimed to know my “personal beliefs” and claimed that I misused my title of professor emeritus at Hobart and William Smith Colleges to lend them credence. That is simply a lie. Nowhere are my personal beliefs stated. Moreover my op-ed included an exceptionally long disclaimer showing The Colleges neither condone nor condemn what I had written.

3. The faculty detractors claim that “Holocaust denial carries absolutely no weight among academic scholars in any field whatsoever.” That is simply not true. There are a number of scholars who write about the typical Holocaust narrative and are willing to fight the slime hurled at them by ardent Zionists and by others who feel it their duty to protect the narrative which serves as the sword and shield of apartheid Israel. (BTW, our former provost and former William Smith Dean both demanded that I not use the word “apartheid” in connection with Israel; granted the term was used in the Israeli press and later by President Carter, but it was not “suitable discourse” on our campus where we routinely claim to support free speech and diversity of opinion.

4. The faculty detractors write that “denying undisputed facts of the holocaust (sic) is not a way to show support for the Palestinians.” First, the three tenets of Holocaust revisionism are clearly not “undisputed.” To the contrary, they are hotly and passionately disputed; people’s lives are ruined when they even question these “facts.” In fourteen countries you can get jail time for disputing “facts” surrounding the Holocaust.

How Elie Wiesel Got the Nobel Peace Prize

Was Wiesel a strange choice?

What has Mr. Wiesel ever done for “peace” or, even more to the point, “world peace?” He was a devoted Zionist even in his youth, working as a journalist for Zion in Kampf, a Yiddish newspaper in Paris (see here). He had many contacts with the Irgun terrorist organization and cheered on their every action; he may well have been even more deeply involved with Irgun. He stated in his memoir that “I belonged to the Irgun.” He has supported every illegal military action in which Israel took over more land, homes and livelihoods of Palestinians, right up to his being an apologist for the latest unprovoked attack on Gaza in 2008-09 when the Jews used white phosphorous bombs on civilians.

Wiesel has never sought to act as a peace-maker in these ongoing unbalanced attacks, nor has he criticized or sought to stop the many wars of the United States since he became a citizen in 1963. He has also promoted a virulent anti-Germanism, e.g. “Every Jew should set aside a zone of hate – healthy, virile hate – for what the German personifies and for what persists in the German.”

So why was Elie Wiesel chosen for the most prestigious award in the Western world, the Nobel Prize for Peace, in 1986 when it still carried a dignified aura? (It has since lost some of that glow because so many of its recipients, including Wiesel, have lost theirs!) What Does Holocaust Denial Really Mean?

In April 2007 the European Union agreed to set jail sentences up to three years for those who deny or trivialize the Holocaust. More recently, in response to the remarks of Bishop Richard Williamson, the Pope has proclaimed that Holocaust denial is “intolerable and altogether unacceptable.”

But what does Holocaust denial really mean? Begin with the word Holocaust. The Holocaust (spelled with a capital H) refers to the killing of six million Jews by the Nazis during World War II. It is supposed to be the Germans’ "Final Solution" to the Jewish problem. Much of the systematic extermination was to have taken place in concentration camps by shooting, gassing, and burning alive innocent Jewish victims of the Third Reich.

People like Germar Rudolf, Ernst Zundel, and Bishop Williamson who do not believe this account and who dare to say so in public are reviled as bigots, anti-Semites, racists, and worse. Their alternate historical scenarios are not termed simply revisionist, but are demeaned as Holocaust denial. Rudolf and Zundel were shipped to Germanywhere they were tried, convicted, and sentenced to three and five years, respectively.

Politicians deride Holocaust revisionist papers and conferences as "beyond the pale of international discourse and acceptable behavior." Non-Zionist Jews who participate in such revisionism, like Rabbi David Weiss of the Neturei Karta, are denounced as "self-haters" and are shunned and spat upon. Even Professor Norman Finkelstein, whose parents were both Holocaust survivors and who wrote the book, The Holocaust Industry, has been branded a ....

I believe you will be aware that this issue 184 of Smith’s Report is behind schedule. Let me count the reasons. To be real, there are only two reasons.

One was a computer problem where something was so wrong with the machine that I was told by my computer fix-it guy that it would be best to install a new platform for the whole enchilada. Sure thing.

The result was that Mr. Fix-It could not get it right. Without burdening you with the entire very boring story I’ll only note that I used up the month of July with a sick machine and lost, in addition to mucho time, all contribution records from the first week in February through the last week in July, 2011. Not to worry, though. I did not lose the contributions themselves.

To complicate my time, I allowed myself to develop a sleeping disorder—the kind where you cannot sleep. Just my luck to not get the sleeping disorder where you sleep all the time, the one that when you’re 81 years old I suppose can be something of a gift. This being life, however, you can’t choose your disorder but have to take the one you get.

And then I had a real disappointment only yesterday afternoon when I was reporting into the VA hospital in La Jolla to have the left knee replaced with one that works. I’d waited five months and I was really ready because I’d like to be able to walk eight or ten miles a week, drop some weight, and regain some of my natural beauty.

It wasn’t to be. A Mexican bug bit the calf of my left leg, I scratched it, it got infected, and Dr. Yu would not take a chance with the possibility for infection and cancelled the surgery. It’ll happen in another three, four months. Meanwhile. . . .

Great Holocaust Trial Defense Attorney Doug Christie is Ailing

According to his wife, Keltie writing in her June, 2011 Friends of Freedom newsletter, 65-year-old Canadian Attorney Douglas Christie, the fearless barrister who so ably defended Ernst Zundel in two historic thought crime trials in Toronto in 1985 and 1988, has “prostate cancer of an aggressive grade that has already spread locally outside the prostate.”

Doug is one of the finest men and purest souls it has been my privilege to know. He went far beyond being Ernst’s attorney. He became his friend and a defender of the German people as a whole. In the course of the two trials he had to absorb thousands of facts, hundreds of books and dozens of maps, models and diagrams in order to defend Ernst to the best of his ability. He spent hours in court and then hours at night and on weekends studying with the Zundel defense team, led by Dr. Robert Faurisson of France. A lesser man would have been broken by the stress and the media libel. Doug relished the challenge and stepped into history’s spotlight chasing destiny.

With the brilliant and thorough organization so typical of Mr. Zundel, Doug’s daily after-court briefings in the basement of Zundelhaus were preserved on video. I have included highlights of those briefings in my documentary film, “The Great Holocaust Trial,” (not to be confused with the book of the same name).

After the Zundel trials, Doug continued his career as “the Clarence Darrow of Canada,” although he stands head-and-shoulders above Darrow, who in some respects was an opportunist (Darrow’s finest hour was his defense of Bill Heywood and the IWW in Idaho in 1907; his nadir was the 1924 Leopold-Loeb case).

Although it is the 150th anniversary of our Civil War (April 1861), ostensibly fought to ensure that America would be one state with equal rights of citizenship for all, most Americans consider it “inconvenient” (if not downright anti-Semitic) to suggest that Israel/Palestine should also be treated as one state with equal rights of citizenship for all. To express this very American goal is to refute our overwhelming desire to divide Palestine into two states and oppose a 130-year old dream to create a Jewish state in the Holy Land.

The reality itself is “inconvenient.” Within the current borders controlled by Israel (including pre-1967 Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights) there is in fact a single state. The land has one electrical grid, one water system, one currency, one major highway system, one postal service, and one external border. It has one powerful military; there are some militias like the Druze Border Guards, the Hamas fighters in Gaza, the Fatah policemen in Ramallah, and Jewish settlers in Kiryat Arba, but there is really only one army, navy, and air force.

If you are wedded to creating a Jewish State, it is “inconvenient” to admit that over half the population of Israel/Palestine is not Jewish. If you claim to opposed apartheid, it is “inconvenient” to point out that there are an unambiguous set of Israeli laws that favor Jews over non-Jews. This is the essence of political Zionism. It is a philosophy and a movement based on racism, chosenness, and Jewish supremacism, but it is most “inconvenient” to even whisper these facts, at least in the United States.

USHMM Commentary: In June 5, 1945, Binem joined a group of boys and young teenagers, known as “The Buchenwald Boys” who were brought to France in a special convey under the sponsorship of the O.S.E. They first were brought to Ecouis in Normandy. An aid worked (sic) helped Binem to make contact with his one surviving sibling, Towa who had spent the war in the Soviet Union. From Ecouis the children were taken to either secular or religious homes. Binem at first wanted to go to a secular home, but Leo Margolis, a German Jew who was in Buchenwald for approximately six years and helped care for the children, persuaded him to go to a religious home. Binem then went to Chateau d’Ambloy. From there he went to Taverny.

Then together with two other teenagers, with Elie Wiesel and Kalman Kaliksztajn, he accompanied a group of younger boys to Chez Nous in Versailles where worked as a counselor. From this experience, Binem decided to become a teacher. After training in France, he immigrated to Israel and became the principal of a Youth Aliyah boarding school. In Israel he met and married Rahel Schlezinger and they went on to have five children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1983 Binem returned to Lodz and erected a new marker at his father’s graves including the names of all of his family members who died during the Holocaust. [end of USHMM commentary]

Ken Waltzer Replies to My Question

In my previous blog of June 14, I asked the question “What happened to Waltzer’s book about the ‘boys of Buchenwald?’” On June 27, Ken Waltzer (pictured right) answered me … sort of. He said he was not having any trouble with the book, but he didn’t say when we could expect to read it. Not a word on that. But he assured Elie Wiesel Cons the World readers that we will find it a powerful story when we do.

Being a person who likes to stick with the practical and real, I’m not satisfied with Prof. Waltzer’s answer because it avoids the real questions in favor of repeating his claims without supporting them. On top of that, he called me a bigot. This is a grievous fault, it seems to me, in a man who is a Professor of Jewish Studies and German History at Michigan State University. Let’s take a look at what he’s said.

Before writing a comment to my blog, Waltzer first wrote a comment on June 26 to Scrapbookpages Blog. The blogmaster there, who goes by the name of “furtherglory,” had blogged June 16 on my ‘boys of Buchenwald’ article. He checks out new articles about Holocaust on the Internet daily, and seems pretty interested in Elie Wiesel. He added an update to the original blog and asked the question: “Has Ken Waltzer finally figured out that there were three separate people involved in this controversy and all three are named Wiesel.” No, he hasn’t. Waltzer continues to insist that they are all Elie Wiesel.

The account of the Holocaust that reigns today is itself a historical phenomenon. Many who have given its content close attention and undertaken to verify it against inanimate evidence surviving to later times have concluded that it is antifactual to a degree rivaled only by certain religious myths such as immaculate conception and the divine right of kings.

Author Samuel Crowell, however, refrains absolutely from addressing the factuality of the regnant Holocaust legend, and addresses himself instead to those conditions and antecedents that themselves reigned in the day (years, actually) in which the account was received, bruited about, accepted, and, yes, here and there rejected as it came into being. Taking this entirely novel, scrupulous approach enables Crowell to claim for himself the characterization of "moderate revisionist." He does not debunk; he merely examines and conveys to later generations, those circumstances that must have given rise to the production and acceptance of accounts of the Holocaust.

One historical matter that he does not address extensively is a very interesting one that he presumably could address with great authority: how has the Holocaust myth been modified, transformed, or appropriated over the sixty-plus years of its strife-torn life to date? Who has from time to time assumed stewardship over its perpetuation and enhancement? Who has undertaken to oppose or even deny it, and to what extent? What legal measures have been enacted and employed by defenders of the mythology, and how have these measures changed in severity and thoroughness of enforcement over the decades leading up to the present moment, in which the contest continues to rage with an intensity quite unanticipated forty years ago? 1. Introduction

According to orthodox holocaust historiography, carbon monoxide from engine exhaust was used to kill nearly 2 million Jews in Poland, Serbia and on occupied Soviet territory between late 1941 and the summer of 1944. The majority of these supposed victims were allegedly killed in stationary gas chambers located in three “pure extermination camps” in the Polish General Government – Bełżec, Sobibór and Treblinka – while the remainder is said to have been killed in mobile “gas vans” that were either stationed at the Chełmno (Kulmhof) camp in the Warthegau area of occupied Poland or employed by Einsatzgruppen or SD units operating in Serbia and on occupied Soviet territory.

Never was the memory of the Holocaust's victims subjected to such an abhorrent use and moral abuses as in Israel today. And no one is more proficient in submitting the abysmal sufferings of the European Jews to the highest bidder than Israel's current Prime Minster, Netanyahu. In this sense, as in other aspects, Netanyahu is truly a democratic leader -- the embodiment of the Israeli collective spirit.

At a special assembly of the Knesset (the Israeli Parliament) honoring Berlusconi Netanyahu delivered a speech culminating in a Meta-Historical analysis about Rome and Jerusalem as the combined cornerstones of the Jewish-Christian tradition and thus the foundation of Western Culture. The fascist reign in Italy was not mentioned. Berlusconi, not a harsh critic of Mussolini, was idolized as a herald of universal values, a bulwark against Nuclear Iran and to some it all the "Keeper of World Peace".

For his grand finale Netanyahu concluded by ever so sensitively relating the tale relating an extraordinary fit of resistance by a young Italian woman. That woman, eight months pregnant, when confronted by the sight of a German policeman (SIC) arresting a Jewish woman on a train refused to stay passive. Without a trace of fear that heroic woman stood between the policeman and his victim announcing: "you can kill me. But look around at the faces of the train travelers, I promise you they won't let you leave the train alive".

With that bold stand, crooned Netanyahu, this brave woman saved the Jewish girl and by doing so lighted up, even for a moment, the great darkness shadowing the lands of Europe. Then Netanyahu posed and delivered his punch line: that brave woman was called Rosa and one of her children is called Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister today.

A strong stench is emanating from this scene: the stench of fabricated tales of courage, of honor philistined; of noble acts defamed, worst of all, of the memory of the Holocaust's victims being sold to one of the worst bidders for apparently no more a reason than media ratings.

The Holocaust Denier Next Door

A group of irate protestors squared off May 15 against Michael Santomauro, an Upper East Side man they claim is a neo-Nazi.

Led by the Jewish Defense Organization, the group consisted of 20 people at the height of an hour-long rally against Santomauro. Holding signs and shouting derogatory names, the protestors taunted Santomauro from behind a blue police barricade while their target sat calmly on his stoop on East 85th Street, at times filming the protest with his iPad.

“The rally was a success, in the sense of numbers,” said Jeff Klein, a spokesperson for the Jewish Defense Organization. “The problem is, we want the Nazi pig headquarters shut down and we want him evicted.”

Santomauro, who could not be reached for comment, runs RePortersNoteBook.com and has called himself a “Holocaust revisionist.” He writes critically of Jews and Israel on the site.

Postmemory

Postmemory is a theoretical construct created by Columbia University professor Marianne Hirsch that effectively creates yet a new tool to be used in the ongoing, transgenerational Holocaust fundraising industry.

The theory is that children and grandchildren experience the pain and suffering of their grandparents by looking at photographs. The photographs don't even need to be of their own ancestors. They can be of any horrible scene of carnage as long as the viewer "believes" that the ancestors were involved in even the most tenuous way.

By looking at the photographs, the viewers become "victims" too. As professor Hirsch writes, "postmemory is a lens which imparts transgenerational memories of traumatic events suffered only indirectly."

A classic example of "Postmemory" occurs every Easter in the Philippines when devoted Catholics whip themselves bloody and have themselves nailed to crosses in order to experience the memories of Christ. There they "re-live" the suffering of the Savior by reenacting the actual terrible suffering He endured.

Professor Hirsch has found an undemanding substitution to being nailed to a cross. She has organized a tour to Czernowitz and Transnistria.

The Professor's original Postmemory revelation occurred as she thumbed through old Life magazines in a Santa Monica, California bookstore. She saw there some photographs of the Liberation of Dachau.

She writes: "Nothing I have seen -- in photographs or in real life -- ever cut me as sharply, deeply, instantaneously. Indeed, it seems plausible to me to divide my life into two parts, before I saw those photographs and after." That's so much easier than getting nailed to a real cross, a sort of Postmemory--Lite!

Of course, we all know that Dachau was overwhelmingly an internment camp for non-Jewish detainees. Most of the dead in the Life photographs were Poles, French, or Russian.

But that doesn't matter to the Professor. Any horrible picture will confirm her Fantasies. The trouble is that she confuses her fantasies with real history.

Dosing the Inmates - Then and Now

In prison camps of the past, inoculating inmates against smallpox (Andersonville, 1864) or killing the lice that spread typhus (Auschwitz, 1943) has given rise to accusations that those running the camps were neglecting, experimenting on, or even murdering the beneficiaries of their attentions.

But at least those incidents were justified by the actual presence of the diseases being combated, even to the extent of raging epidemics. In 2002 in the prison camp operated by the United States in Guantanamo, Cuba, there has never been a case of malaria reported. Yet, ostensibly because some of the detainees came from areas with some incidence of malaria, all of the detainees have been subjected to inoculation with an anti-malarial that has such severe and frequent side effects that members of the US armed forces have quit the service rather than be subjected to it.

Furthermore, hundreds of contractor personnel at Guantanamo that come directly from places with far-higher rates of malaria than the places the detainees come from have not been inoculated with this anti-malarial, and possibly not with any other, either (nor have they been subjected to close physical examination for the presence of malaria).

The effects of the anti-malarial are literally torturous, but the information to be gained from the hundreds of subjects receiving it could be most useful to the politically well-connected producer of the vaccine, and perhaps medical science itself, if said producer honestly and fully shares the data arising from this torture-cum-experimentation being performed on America's hapless prisoners.

Some of this may sound familiar to students of prison camps past.

The Eagle is running a text link of ours titled "From Lady Gaga to Saigon and Back Again." I expect that once it is "discovered" to be there you will receive complaints from those who do not want to encourage, or to even allow, a free exchange of ideas regarding the Holocaust question. With regard to your own paper, The Daily Bruin, I am going to guess (no one there will say) that the paper does not want to offend Jewish sensibilities by allowing questions to be asked, or even suggested, about the Holocaust issue. At the same time, The Bruin has no compunction about offending the sensibilities of those students who are Muslim.

If a Muslim student were to ask a professor at UCLA, any professor, to provide, with proof, the name of one person killed in a gas chamber at Auschwitz, she would have her sensibilities offended with a cruel maliciousness.

And then of course there are those students at UCLA, Jews, Muslims, whatever, who believe in the ideal of the right to a free exchange of ideas. Including asking questions about the Holocaust story. Is there one professor at UCLA who will stand with such students in the light of day?

With regard to history and to intellectual freedom, at UCLA has the academic made of himself the enemy of the student?

Reading Samuel Crowell's, "The Gas Chamber of Sherlock Holmes" is a little like stumbling across a rational mind in an insane asylum years after being taken hostage by the inmates.

Following prolonged immersion in clashing dogmas, the dispassionate use of evidence and logic to arrive at a sensible conclusion comes as a jolting but thoroughly pleasant surprise. And Crowell's modesty in stating that conclusion tentatively, knowing that genuinely rational inquiry will and should be superseded by later efforts, is an equally refreshing departure from polemical norms.

Drawing on establishment and revisionist authors, along with a careful scrutiny of German source documents, Crowell deftly evaluates contending claims arguing that Nazi "gas chambers" were (1) weapons of extermination (2) disinfection chambers (3) bomb shelters designed to protect against aerial gas attacks. Aligning eyewitness testimony with the material and documentary record, he sketches out the basis for a rational opinion, putting readers in a position to make their own judgments, without first requiring that they join in partisan warfare.

Thanks to this effort we no longer need choose between delusional orthodoxy and strident dissidence, but can simply weigh evidence. This should come as a relief to everyone, while hopefully expanding the number of readers who can move beyond ritual denunciation and actually take the gas chamber debate seriously

Hungary's Wiesenthal Institute has put another war criminal on trial in Budapest.
In 2080, some Institute (still Wiesenthal, at this rate) will be getting Americans who were in uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan today put on trial for the many murders of civilians that undoubtedly are being committed in those places at this moment.
And in 2080, civilians will be getting murdered in probably several places (maybe America) where war, whether just or unjust, is being conducted (possibly looking for somebody named Osama, Obama, or Okama).
Trials for those killings will still be getting launched in 2149.

More Than He Knows What to Do With

When Dov Hikind, New York Assemblyman from Brooklyn, deprived Historian David Irving of the means to accept credit-card payments October before last, he got a dozen other city and state politicians to join him in the deed, an impressive demonstration of political mobbery, or of consensus building, whichever way you prefer to see it.

Either way, it showed that a lot of pols in the area might feel they owe Hikind something or other as he goes about his nefarious projects. Just what they might owe him is detailed in today's City Hall News: illegally diverted taxpayer's money.

Yes, Dov Hikind of Boro Park, has got more campaign funds than he even needs to secure his own re-election as recently as last Election Day, when for the first time in many years he faced "opposition" from Republican Brian Doherty.

Pathetically, I tried on this blog to mobilize donations to Doherty just to express our collective views on Hikind's respect for global freedom of speech. How little chance our pittances had against Hikind's massive war chest is starkly highlighted by this incident.

But maybe there is hope. For all the stolen lucre lavished by our Dov on his anointed ally, Joe Lazar, his beneficiary still lost the election!

The Holocaust: Where "White Men" Fear to Tread

The pervasiveness and pejorative aspect of Holocaustery is eloquently demonstrated in this post on the Web site of The Occidental Observer (TOO).

TOO is a "white nationalist" organization, and its overtly racial principles expose it to accusations of Neo-Nazism with a frequency that might exceed even the frequency with which the charge is leveled at CODOH, which does not advocate for or against any race, religion, party, or group.

In "Strategies for White Advocacy," the section headed "Avoid the tripwires of massive propaganda" begins with the stringent advice never, ever to mention or betray the slightest sympathy for, or even interest, in "Holocaust revisionism." I'd guess the danger lies in the direction of the Neo-Nazi charges they'd understandably prefer to avoid.

But the testimony to the power and wrath of the Holocaust mythology is stark, in and of itself.

Sylvia Stolz released from prison

German barrister Sylvia Stolz left her prison in Aichach, Bavaria at nine o’clock this morning, all smiles and greeted by thirty or so people who had gathered in near-freezing weather: these were either personal friends or supporters of the cause that is hers and that had led her to endure 39 months’ incarceration for “extreme rightwing delinquency.”

The party quickly moved on to a nearby Gasthof (hotel-restaurant), first to listen to Sylvia describe her life as a prison inmate, then to put questions about various aspects of her case. That, as we know, was brought on by her too forthright defence in court both of her client, Mr Ernst Zündel (freed himself early in March of last year after seven years in prison), and of her homeland, Germany, horribly maligned by the hate propaganda of the last war that has become History. A defence which, in her opinion, is now most urgently needed to preserve that great country from nothing less than the extinction which seems to be ordained by that History.

In a voice smooth and fine though robust nonetheless, she was keen to show, in particular, that despite the negative outcome of her appeal against the five-year ban from practising law that accompanied the prison sentence – a quite recent decision which, in addition, also carried permanent disbarment – she had still not lost her characteristic assurance: she had been granted leave to proceed with an action in recourse before the constitutional court in Karlsruhe. On the other hand, we learned that she was subject to a five-year supervision order, under which she would have to report to a justice ministry official each month (that frequency is subject to appeal).

After that little impromptu conference and a casual lunch, a message from Professor Robert Faurisson was translated aloud by Dr Günter Deckert, the day’s organiser (English text at http://robertfaurisson.blogspot.com/2011/04/hail-sylvia-stolz.html). Then Lady Michèle Renouf, one of the few foreigners to have made the journey, interviewed the former prisoner in front of a video camera, in order to let her thoughts be heard in the English-speaking world via the Internet (Dr Deckert served as interpreter to put Sylvia’s replies into English).

The guests gradually dispersed, and at around 4:30 pm the last eight, including Sylvia herself, made a short jaunt by car – less than a mile – to see the Wasserschloss Unterwittelsbach, a pretty country mansion surrounded by a pond and better known as “Sissi’s Castle”, where Elisabeth, Empress of Austria, spent her childhood summers. The first breaths of fresh air in three and a quarter years for an especially noble woman who graces our own era.

Buying into Orthodox Politics

New York Republican Congressman Michael Grimm is described in this recent article in the Forward.

His recent election from a district extensively overlapping that of Dov Hikind in Brooklyn was marked by a phenomenon instigated by me on this blog in the recent re-election of Hikind to the New York Assembly: donations by interested parties from outside the district.

Grimm would seem to have elicited "Jewish" donations from outside the area (see article) by such antics as advocating the release of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, even while John Demjanjuk languishes in the defendant's box in an endless succession of trials for having been a camp guard over sixty years ago.

I, on the other hand, advocated donations to the campaign of Hikind's opponent for his Assembly seat because of Hikind's making it difficult for people all over the world to avail themselves of the books and videos of David Irving, which displeased Hikind and perhaps some of his constituents. This initiated a witch hunt for me and other "Holocaust deniers" among the persons recorded as having donated to Brian Doherty's campaign (I've received no refund of my donation thus far).

Unlike Grimm, Doherty lost that time. It would seem that Jewish money works better than that of Holocaust deniers.

Or maybe there's just more of it.

Honorable Consul General:

I am writing out of concern that a grave injustice is being done to John Demjanjuk. It has been discovered and made known that the US government agency which has been prosecuting Mr. Demjanjuk has concealed potentially exculpatory evidence. According to an exclusive Associated Press report:

"An FBI report kept secret for 25 years said the Soviet Union 'quite likely fabricated' evidence central to the prosecution of John Demjanjuk."

This agency is the Office of Special Investigations of the Justice Department. The evidence relates to the so-called Nazi personal identification card which is the keystone piece of evidence in charges that Demjanjuk served as a guard at the Sobibor camp. This Identity card was required to be carried at all times by Demjanjuk. The Soviets did not explain how they acquired the Id. Card, although it has been claimed that Demjanjuk had forgotten the card at Sobibor in 1943.

The Office of Special Investigations has a history of faking evidence and concealing facts favorable to its targets. It would be most unfortunate if the German Courts put any faith in evidence produced either by the Soviets or the OSI. Clearly Mr. Demjanjuk should be given help in clearing his name.

I would like to ask that you forward my concern to the German Government.

Billy Wilder His Secret Work on a Holocaust Myth Movie

Marilyn Monroe and Ilse Koch. It's hard to imagine two more polar opposites. Yet Billy Wilder worked on scripts for both of them. This article offers evidence of Wilder's involvement in the Psychological Warfare Department's ridiculous foray into filmmaking: The denazification film project documenting the citizens of Weimar on a forced tour of Buchenwald and being shown a table display featuring a supposed human skin lampshade, and being told it was made at the request of the commandant's wife, Ilse Koch. The lampshade myth then blowing back into America and becoming associated with the holocaust for generations of Americans who also laughed at Wilder's screwball comedies like Some Like It Hot.

Not that the lampshade was Wilder's idea. It was probably a PsyWar brainchild (along with two shrunken heads) based on camp rumours which Wilder then adapted for the screen. Wilder, however, would adamantly disagree: his story is that he wasn't even on the continent, let alone at Buchenwald at the time. But we'll show he's lying. First lets examine his account:

Jailing the Lawyers

On February 21, 2009 Mahler was sentenced to six years imprisonment without possibility of reduction or bail, by a Munich court of justice; during the verdict the judge said that Mahler had proven "not able to be re-educated" and declared that he as a judge should stop the "nationalist rattle" and "nonsense spread" by Horst Mahler.[19] On March 11 a Potsdam Court sentenced 73 year old Horst Mahler to additional five years imprisonment for Holocaust denial and banalization of Nazi war crimes, due to the perceived danger of an escape attempt, the sentence was to be immediately carried out.[20] It is expected that Mahler will appeal the verdicts.
On March 19, 2009 Mahler's good friend, the former university teacher and lawyer Sylvia Stolz, was also convicted and imprisoned for Holocaust denial, and for her claims that a "Jewish foreign power" ruled the German federal authorities and the Western world, and for claiming that the federal German courts practised "Allied victors' justice" by limiting free speech.[21] [Wikipedia]

S. Holocaust Memorial Museum this April 12th. Your hypothesis on “postmemory” has been stated as: Postmemory describes the relationship of the second generation to powerful, often traumatic, experiences that preceded their births but that were nevertheless transmitted to them so deeply as to seem to constitute memories in their own right. Focusing on the remembrance of the Holocaust, this essay elucidates the generation of postmemory and its reliance on photography as a primary medium of transgenerational transmission of trauma. Agreeing with the commonplace observation that the first casualty of war is Truth, our premise is that some real tragedies are exaggerated and exploited for propaganda purposes while other equally horrible tragedies are ignored. This perspective influences how we should look at any discussion of postmemory. The Great Bengal Famine of 1943 was the result of the “scorched earth” policies of Winston Churchill and his general antipathy to the Indian masses. Over 3 million people, mainly unphotographed women and children, starved to death. Yet the first and only western book on the horror was published only last year with Madhusree Mukerjee's Churchill's Secret War. The dreadful famine that engulfed Ukraine in 1932-1933 is another unphotographed and forgotten horror where perhaps millions starved to death. The Second Congo War, with over 5 million dead, is probably the most deadly conflict since World War II. How many have heard of it? Again, unphotographed and forgotten. Ironically, one of the very few references to the brutal Congo War on the Holocaust Museum Website is entitled "Never Again or Never Remember?" This title underscores fundamental questions about postmemory. When I contrast the sickening but ignored tragedies of Bengal, the Ukraine, or Zaire with your theories of the transmittal of “trauma” over generations, I end up wondering if postmemory might not be a “luxury” of the photographed? A "luxury" that can be, and can be argued is, exploited for gain. Will descendents of brutalized Ukrainians, starved Bengalis, or slaughtered Tutsi end up without postmemory trauma because “inconvenient” photographs of starving mothers and babies ended up on the cutting room floor of British or Soviet censors and/or the indifference of news editors? Is letting go of “transgenerational transmission of trauma” perhaps a decent and normal process that should be encouraged? Society itself chooses to transmit transgenerational trauma by choosing which horrors it will remember. It chooses to remember some, chooses to discard others. Our own government has chosen to not tally the deaths of civilians caused by our 2003 invasion of Iraq. Will the lack of numbers and photographs of maimed and murdered Iraqi children equal no postmemory trauma for future Americans? How convenient. But there is a more important question about postmemory. It has been noted that history is "only" a story that we believe is true. Some history achieves the status of political iconography. Some history becomes "sacred." Questioning a sacred memory, a sacred history, is treated as blasphemy. As with any perceived blasphemy, doubters are punished with a cruel severity. The venue of your lecture is the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. That being so, it would seem that the discussion of postmemory needs to address, among its other issues, the line between Museum and Memorial. A museum needs to retain the intellectual spark to question the historicity of what it displays. A memorial through its displays seeks to convert what we believe into "sacred" history. Would the "Museum" ever display materials that question what the "Memorial" holds to be sacred? Is "postmemory" a hypothesis that implies we can have it both ways? A Despicable Book

On 28 February I posted the lead-in to a story in Haaretz about Israeli Rabbi Dov Lior and his refusal to be interrogated over his support for The King's Torah and the "laws" for killing Gentiles.

The next day, on 01 March, Rabbi Aryeh Tuchman noted he was "finally" able to get hold of The King's Torah—which was published in 2009. It's probably a coincidence that he found it the day following my 28 February post. On 01 March Tuchman posted the following on his J-Hate blog.

I was finally able to find a copy of the book, Torat HaMelech (“The King’s Torah”), and have spent the past hour or so reading through it. I have never been so repulsed, disgusted and angered by a book — and that’s saying a lot, given how much anti-Semitic stuff I read.

Torat HaMelech is itself precisely the obscene caricature of Judaism that one finds in the allegations of anti-Semites. In the US this book would be protected by the First Amendment, but in Israel there are laws against this type of thing, and I support the prosecution of the authors and promoters of Torat HaMelech to the full extent that those laws allow.

It is important that we who expose and fight against anti-Semitism be willing to denounce extremism and bigotry in our own communities as well. There is no excuse for it.

The atrocities in Libya send an unequivocal message to the world: Patriotism lies with democracy, not with the regime.

The wretchedness of the law in the face of Rabbi Dov Lior has many meanings, and Lior's refusal to be interrogated over his support for "The King's Torah - The Laws for Killing Gentiles" - only marginally gets at the heart of the matter.

Thirty years ago, the terrorist organization known as the "Jewish Underground" was set up with the purpose of killing Arabs. The group's head of operations, Menachem Livni - who was convicted on multiple counts of murder before being pardoned by the regime - testified at the time that the living spirit, the initiator, the religious instructor and the coordinator of the murders was Lior.

This was true for the murders the underground carried out, and was also true for the pressure he put on the murderers to blow up buses and their passengers. The law states that someone who dispatches murders should receive multiple life sentences, along with additional time for organizing the crime. But thanks to instruction from higher up, Lior was never imprisoned, put to trial and or even properly interrogated.
